To accelerate efforts universal sanitation coverage and focus on sanitation, the prime minister of India launched the swachh Bharat mission on 2 October 2024. Under this mission, all village gram Panchayats, districts, States and union territories in India declared themselves open defection fee (ODF) by 2 October 2019 the 15th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by constructing more than 100 million toilets in rural India.
To ensure the open defection free behavior is sustained, no one is left behind and solid and liquid waste management facilities are accessible, the mission is moving to the next Phase ll of SBMG i.e.ODF- Plus. ODF Plus activities under Phase ll of Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin Toilet reinforce ODF behaviors and focus on providing interventions for safe management of solid and liquid waste in village.
Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin launched on 2 October 2014 by releasing the erstwhile Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA), is a community LED and pupil Orion programme aimed at universalizing safe sanitation. Swachh Bharat mission (Gramin) is the only sanitation program implemented by the ministry of drinking water and sanitation (now Minister of Jal Shakti).
